Republican House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy's Office Attacked With Massive Stone

A large rock was thrown through the window of House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy's office in Bakersfield, California, on Monday evening, the Republican congressman said.

McCarthy, who said equipment was also stolen, posted security camera photos of two men on social media, asking the public to help identify them.

"Does anyone know these two guys? They threw a boulder thru our office window and took office equipment," he wrote on Instagram.

The Bakersfield Police Department and McCarthy's Bakersfield office could not be reached for comment prior to publication.

The attack comes as a tense political environment sweeps the nation two weeks before midterm elections in which all 435 House seats are up for grabs.

Democrats hope to regain control of Congress's lower chamber.

Political tensions rose during the confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who was accused of sexual assault by three women.

The president has since repeatedly criticized Democrats. On Monday night while speaking at a campaign rally in Houston for Texas Senator Ted Cruz, President Donald Trump accused Democrats of having "launched an assault on the sovereignty of our country," according to The New York Times.

The comments, which come as thousands of migrants march toward the U.S.-Mexico border, echoed Trump's previous attacks on the Democrats for their immigration stance.

"Every time you see a Caravan, or people illegally coming, or attempting to come, into our Country illegally, think of and blame the Democrats for not giving us the votes to change our pathetic Immigration Laws!" he tweeted on Monday.

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul expressed anxiety about the divisive political environment earlier in the month. "I fear that there's going to be an assassination," he said. "I really worry that somebody is going to be killed, and that those who are ratcheting up the conversation, they have to realize they bear some responsibility if this elevates to violence."

Partisans have recently heckled congressional representatives from both parties.

Protesters confronted House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in two separate incidents last week.

Pelosi, a Democrat, was campaigning for Florida House candidate Donna Shalala. Members of the far-right "Western chauvinist" Proud Boys group called Pelosi a "piece of s*** and f***ing Communist."

McConnell was eating at a restaurant in Kentucky when he was met by angry diners. "Why don't you get out of here? Why don't you leave the entire country?" one man shouted."

A diner also told BuzzFeed News that someone yelled, "'You're a traitor to this country' over and over and told him how he was ruining this country."
