The majority of Americans—including Republicans—believe President Donald Trump is not even-tempered, a new poll released Monday morning revealed.
Overall, only 24 percent of American adults surveyed in a Pew Research Center poll from September 18 to 24 said Trump was even-tempered, while close to three times as many, 70 percent, said he was not even-tempered.
Notably, only 45 percent of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents said Trump was even-tempered, which was more than 20 percentage points lower than how they rated him on other personal traits. Only 10 percent of Democrats and Democratic-leaners said the president was even-tempered.
"There are large partisan divides in evaluations of Trump's personal traits and characteristics, though the gaps are not as wide in views of Trump's temperament," the Pew Research Center poll report stated.
Trump's overall ratings on his temperament worsened slightly from a January 2018 Pew poll in which 68 percent said he was not even-tempered and 25 percent said the reverse, as well as a February 2017 poll in which 68 percent said he was not even tempered and 28 percent indicated the opposite.
Almost daily, the president has fired off tweets in which he raged at his opponents. He has used the social media platform to name call, labeling North Korean leader Kim Jong Un "little rocket man" and former White House aide Omarosa Manigault Newman a "dog."
Last month, investigative journalist Bob Woodward in his new book, and a senior administration official in an anonymous New York Times op-ed, wrote of the chaos within the White House, describing how the president's inner circle would take steps to thwart the president's worst impulses that they believed could lead to disaster. An Axios/Survey Monkey poll released shortly after found that 55 percent of Americans believed both of those accounts.
Except for the temperament category, Republicans gave Trump good ratings—70 percent or higher—on seven other traits in the Pew Research Center poll. The traits included being trustworthy, well-informed, a strong leader, keeping his promises, able to get things done, caring about people and standing up for what he believes in.
Democrats rated Trump 22 percent or lower on all eight traits except for standing up for what he believes in, for which he received 52 percent.
The latest Pew Research Center poll surveyed 1,754 adults across the U.S. and had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.
