Full List of Republicans Retiring from House This Year

The House of Representatives has seen a growing number of Republicans heading for the exit.

The number so far isn't significantly different to previous election cycles, but this wave of retirements signals a potential shift in the power dynamics within Congress and raises questions about the future direction of the party.

Using data from ballotpedia.org, Newsweek has compiled a list of House GOP members who have announced they are not seeking re-election in November, either through retirement, plans to seek another public office, or, in one case, being expelled from Congress over fraud allegations.

The list will be updated as and when new announcements are made.

What This Means for the Republican Party

At least eight of those departing are between the ages of 35 and 60, relative young guns in the halls of Congress, and a handful currently hold powerful committee chair roles. Thirty-six-year-old Jacob LaTurner is a freshman from Kansas, first elected just two years ago (as was George Santos of New York, but his departure wasn't voluntary).

A number of those leaving early or not seeking re-election in November cited Congress's dysfunction and the inability to get things done.

"We lost our way," Colorado's Ken Buck said of his fellow Republicans when he announced his early retirement, adding that the party had an identity crisis.

Buck's congressional neighbor Lauren Boebert is running for his vacant seat instead of seeking reelection to her current district. The House Freedom Caucus member hung on to her seat to in 2022 with just 546 more votes than her Democratic challenger.

The most recent early retirement, by Mike Gallagher, will bring the GOP House majority to one, as Speaker Mike Johnson faces efforts by hard-right members of the party to kick him out of his post.

Representatives like Georgia's Marjorie Taylor Greene have been unhappy about Johnson's dealmaking with Democrats and his support for Ukraine against its war with Russia.

"Providing lethal aid to Ukraine right now is critically important," Johnson said after proposing a bill to send more aid to the embattled European nation, "I would rather send bullets to Ukraine than American boys."

In response to threats over his ouster, Johnson told reporters: "My philosophy is you do the right thing and you let the chips fall where they may. If I operated out of fear of a motion to vacate, I would never be able to do my job."

Newsweek has also compiled a list of Democratic House members not seeking re-election this year, which can be read here.
