'House of Cards' Star Robin Wright Breaks Silence on Kevin Spacey

Robin Wright discussed her former House of Cards co-star Kevin Spacey for the first time since the actor was accused of sexual assault and fired by Netflix last year. Wright, who plays lead character Claire Underwood, spoke of Spacey's departure while appearing on the Today show Monday.

Despite playing the role of Frank Underwood's (Spacey) wife since the show first debuted in 2013, Wright said she didn't have a personal relationship with Spacey. "We were coworkers, really. We never socialized outside of work," Wright said.

"[It was a] respectful, professional relationship. He was so great with me. He was never disrespectful to me, so that's my personal experience. That's the only thing that I feel I have the right to talk about," she continued.

Wright, 52, added: "Kevin and I knew each other between action and cut and in between setups where we would giggle. I didn't know the man. I knew the incredible craftsman that he is."

Wright told Today's Savannah Guthrie that the show's cast and crew were "surprised, of course, and ultimately saddened" after learning of the sexual misconduct allegations, but noted she was "so thankful" they were able to forge ahead and finish filming the series without Spacey.

Wright said she hadn't spoken with Spacey since the accusations first emerged. "I haven't heard from him and I don't even know how to reach him," she said.

In October, Star Trek actor Anthony Rapp accused Spacey of sexually harassing him in 1986 when he was 14 years old. Spacey was 26 at the time. In a statement, Spacey admitted he did not remember the encounter but blamed the incident on "inappropriate drunken behavior." The 58-year-old also came out and offered Rapp an apology.

One day after Rapp's accusation, Netflix suspended the production of House of Cards even though the Season 6 script was nearly finished. After a number of show staffers came forward with their own accusations about Spacey's alleged behavior, Netflix fired Spacey. Weeks later the network said it would return with Wright at the helm of the show, as the new President Underwood.

Spacey is currently being investigated in relation to three additional sexual assault claims in London.
