Ryan Mason, the Hull City midfielder, suffered a fractured skull during Sunday's English Premier League defeat to Chelsea, his club announced late Sunday evening.

Mason, 25, was involved in a clash of heads with Chelsea defender Gary Cahill, who later scored Chelsea's second goal with a header. He was taken off the pitch on a stretcher after the clash 13 minutes into the game, according to the BBC. Antonio Conte's side moved eight points clear at the top of the English Premier League with the 2-0 win at home.

"The club [Hull] can confirm that Ryan Mason sustained a skull fracture in our fixture at Chelsea this afternoon," a statement on the club's website read. "Ryan is in a stable condition and is expected to remain in hospital for the next few days."

Mason was taken to St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, west London, where he had surgery.

Chelsea scored its first goal in the nine minutes added on at the end of the first half—Diego Costa swept home on his return to the starting line-up following a dispute with the club's fitness coaches.
