The 2023 awards season is in full swing and the latest prestigious event to occur, the 29th annual SAG Awards, took place on Sunday, February 26 at Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles, California.
The nominations for the glitzy ceremony, which celebrates achievements in film and television, were announced on January 11 by White Lotus actress Haley Lu Richardson and Ashley Park from Emily in Paris.
Movie projects like Viola Davis' The Woman King, Martin McDonagh's The Banshees of Inisherin and The Whale, starring Brendan Fraser, led the nominations ahead of Sunday night's ceremony.
Meanwhile, in television, Quinta Brunson's Abbott Elementary, Mike White's White Lotus and the Jean Smart-led Hacks were among the nominees.
As well as the previously announced nominations, there was also a very special prize given out on the night as 80 For Brady star Sally Field was given the SAG Life Achievement Award.
The actress, 76, who has featured in classic movies like Forrest Gump and Mrs. Doubtfire, became the 58th recipient of the honor, which celebrates "outstanding achievement in fostering the finest ideals of the acting profession."
Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, Rita Moreno, and Debbie Reynolds have all received the award in the past.
Field was presented the award by Tick, Tick...Boom! actor Andrew Garfield, with whom she shares a link as they both starred in different versions of the Spider-Man movies.
As is usual for the SAG Awards, there was no host for the ceremony but famous faces like Aubrey Plaza and Jenna Ortega, as well as Jenny Slate and James Marsden, among others, took to the stage to present trophies to their acting peers.
While the award ceremonies that take place in the run-up to the Academy Awards normally give a hint at who will take home the Oscars for each category, this year there has shown a bit of variety in the main-prize recipients.
Both Cate Blanchett, for Tár, and Michelle Yeoh, for Everything, Everywhere, All At Once, have had success in the lead actress categories, while The Banshees of Inisherin's Colin Farrell has proved a competitor for Fraser's winning streak for his lead role in The Whale.
Everything, Everywhere, All At Once's supporting actress Jamie Lee Curtis took home a trophy at Sunday night's SAG Awards, but The Banshees of Inisherin's Kerry Condon and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever's Angela Bassett have both also won in that category at other award shows.
While there may have been a few surprises at the SAG Awards, it was still a night full of great celebrations, honoring the best achievements in film and television performances for the year.
