What Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber Have Said About Each Other

Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber were one of Hollywood's most famous couples.

The singers dated on and off from 2010 until 2018 after meeting in 2009. In an interview with Los Angeles radio host DJ Skee, Bieber, 28, revealed that Gomez, 30, was his celebrity crush and they were later introduced by their managers.

"Actually, his manager [Scooter Braun] called my mom, who is my manager," Gomez said during an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman in 2011.

Despite rumors the A-listers were dating, they insisted their relationship was platonic.

While chatting with MTV News in December 2010, Gomez said, "I love Justin," she told the outlet, noting that he's "such a good kid."

"I feel like a big sister now, 'cause I want to protect him," she said. "So I'm always very cautious with him, but he is so talented and he's so sweet, so that just started us wanting to work together. Now he's just become one of my good friends."

The couple was spotted kissing on a yacht in the Caribbean that December and made their red carpet debut at the Vanity Fair Oscars party in February 2011. Still, they avoided confirming their romance.

"He's little! He's like my little brother. That's weird to me," Gomez told Ellen DeGeneres in March 2011 when asked if they were an item.

Gomez Confirms Their Relationship

It wasn't until May 2011 that Gomez finally confirmed their relationship.

"I don't like hiding. I do like to keep certain things to myself, but at the end of the day, I'm 18 and I'm going to fall in love," she told Seventeen at the time. "I'm going to hang out with people and I'm going to explore myself, and I'm OK with that."

While speaking to Oprah Winfrey in 2012, Bieber revealed the efforts they would often go through just to spend time together—like sneaking out the back door of venues.

"I never make her separate from me [because] I don't ever want her to feel like I'm ashamed of her," he told Winfrey, 68, on Oprah's Next Chapter. "I feel like a lot of guys do that, especially in the business. They don't want to be seen with [their girlfriend], so they'll make them ride in separate cars and do all that getaway stuff. [But] if we get away, we're getting away together."

In a separate interview with Rolling Stone in July 2012, Bieber said he makes sure to "do the little things."

"Like noticing when they get their hair done, or when they change their nail color," he said. "Also saying things all the time—like, 'You're very pretty,' 'You're gorgeous,' things like that."

Gomez, Justin Bieber Break Up for First Time

Gomez and Bieber split for the first time in November 2012 but appeared to be back together by April 2013 after Bieber posted a slew of throwback photos with her.

One of the images included the "Lose You to Love Me" singer hugging him with the caption, "'You've been makin music for too long babe come cuddle' -her."

While chatting with radio host Big Boy, Bieber confirmed that the pair did split in 2012.

"[The breakup] affected us, especially when we are in front of so many people," Bieber said in December 2013, revealing that his song "All That Matters" was written about their uncoupling.

Ultimately, the duo went their separate ways yet again—with Gomez dating Russian-German DJ Zedd and Bieber being linked to Hailey Baldwin, with whom he was spotted kissing in St. Barts in December 2015.

In January 2016, Gomez said she was "so beyond done" talking about her ex.

"Honestly, what I would love to be printed is that I am so beyond done with talking about that, and him," she told Rolling Stone. "I honestly am so done. I care about his health and well-being. But I can't do it anymore."

In a different interview with W magazine, she doubled down on her comments about Canada native, telling the outlet she was "so exhausted" discussing him.

Gomez, Bieber Feud on Instagram

By August 2016, Bieber had a new girlfriend—Lionel Richie's daughter, Sofia Richie. The singer got into a heated spat with Gomez on Instagram after he said he would make his account private following backlash he received over their relationship.

"If you can't handle the hate then stop posting pictures of your girlfriend lol—it should be special between you two only. Don't be mad at your fans. They love you," she said.

In response, Bieber said, "It's funny to see people that used me for attention and still trying to point the finger this way. Sad. All love. I'm not one for anyone receiving hate."

"Funny how the ones that cheated multiple times, are pointing the finger at the ones that were forgiving and supportive, no wonder fans are mad. Sad," Gomez shot back. "All love."

Gomez dated fellow singer The Weeknd—whose real name is Abel Makkonen Tesfaye—in 2017. The couple split 10 months later, and she was spotted on a bike ride with Bieber in Los Angeles. Within the same week, they went out to breakfast and attended church together.

In November 2017, Gomez spoke out about their rekindled love to Billboard, saying that her split from The Weeknd "ended as best friends."

"I'm 25. I'm not 18, or 19, or 20. I cherish people who have really impacted my life," she said of Bieber. "So maybe before, it could have been forcing something that wasn't right. But that doesn't mean caring for someone ever goes away."

The following year, however, the couple decided to call it quits one last time. Bieber wed Baldwin in 2018 and Gomez is single.

"I feel haunted by a past relationship that no one wanted to let go of, but then I just moved past it. And I wasn't afraid anymore," the Rare Beauty founder said in her documentary Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me, which was filmed in 2019.

"I feel like I had to go through the worst possible heartbreak ever, and then, just forgetting everything at the drop of a hand, it was really confusing. But I just think that needed to happen. And ultimately, it was the best thing that ever happened to me."

In December 2022, Gomez commented on a TikTok video posted by user @donttellmymomma.fr that said the pop star was "always skinny" while she dated Bieber.

"He rathers models..My poor baby. #selenagomez," the caption of the video read.

In response, Gomez posted a pensive face emoji.
