Shailene Woodley's 350-Calorie Diet and 5 Other Actors Who Lost Weight for Movie Roles

Shailene Woodley went on an extreme diet for her role in the new movie Adrift, in theaters now.

"For the last two weeks I had a can of salmon, some steamed broccoli and two egg yolks every day—350 calories," the actress told The Sunday Times Thursday. "It was f***ing miserable." In order to deal with the hunger that kept her awake, she had "a glass of wine to basically pass the f*** out."

Woodley plays Tami Oldham alongside Sam Claflin's Richard Sharp in Adrift. Based on a true story, the couple is sailing the ocean from Tahiti to San Diego when they face a hurricane. Though they both survive the storm, they end up stranded in the middle of the ocean, their sailboat is damaged and they don't have a working radio.

Woodley's diet was so that she would look like Tami did after 41 days stranded at sea with only food like peanut butter and Spam to eat.

Claflin also went on an extreme diet for the film. "I was on a crash diet from the second I got to Fiji," he said in a Q&A after a screening in London last week, according to People. "I wasn't eating very much and I'd set out and had about three or four coffees first thing in the morning with no food." That led to him throwing up on the boat.

Woodley and Claflin aren't the only ones who have gone on crash diets for film roles. Listed below are five actors who also restricted their calorie intake:

1. Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler

The actor lost 30 pounds for his role as Louis Bloom, "I would try to eat as few calories as possible. I knew if I was hungry that I was in the right spot," the actor told Variety in 2014. There were nights he didn't have anything.

2. Christian Bale for The Machinist

The actor dropped to 121 pounds to play Trevor Reznik and did so by only having an apple and a can of tuna each day, according to People.

3. Jared Leto for Dallas Buyers Club

"I just basically didn't eat. I ate very little" in order to lose 30 pounds and weigh 116 to play Rayon, a transsexual who has AIDS, the actor told E! Online in 2013.

4. Michelle Pfeiffer for Scarface

"I think I was living on tomato soup and Marlboros," the actress said at an April panel for the film's 35th anniversary, according to People. She played Elvira, a cocaine addict, and she explained, "I was starving by the end of it because the one scene that was the end of the film where I needed to be my thinnest" kept being pushed back.

5. Anne Hathaway for Les Miserables

Her diet was "definitely a little nuts," the actress told Vogue in 2012. She only had two squares of dried oatmeal paste a day to lose weight to play Fantine.
