Shetland Sheepdog Who Loves Agility Courses and Hiking Wins Pet of the Week

This week we've been in stitches after a cat's reaction to its owner doing a TikTok dance gained viral attention and watched in awe as a Rottweiler and pit bull caused mass destruction at a home in an unbelievable clip.

We at Newsweek love seeing animal antics, and this week we've not been disappointed with our reader's submissions of their pets. After much deliberation, we've put together this week's Newsweek Pet of the Week line-up. If you think your pet has got what it takes don't forget to scroll to the end of this story to find out how you can get involved.

This week's Newsweek Pet of the Week—Splash the Shetland Sheepdog loves the agility course and hiking with friends. Sharon Fortune

This week our top dog is Splash the Shetland Sheepdog from Connellsville, Pennsylvania.

Living with his owner Sharon Fortune, this 8-year-old pup is full of energy and is always ready for adventure.

Fortune told Newsweek: "She's my pet first, but she does agility."

Agility is one of the fastest-growing dog sports in the country. Offering great exercise for you and your pooch, it involves directing your canine friend through a preset obstacle course within a time limit.

Typically with 14-20 obstacles to tackle, agility courses include tunnels, weave poles, tire jumps, seesaws, and more.

A great activity for all dog breeds, the American Kennel Club (AKC) says that there are over 1 million entries to its agility program each year. "Whether you just want to have fun exercising with your dog, or want to go further and enter an agility competition, get ready for a fast-paced, rewarding experience that will get you and your dog in the best shape of your lives," says the AKC.

Originally from a breeder in New York, Splash's fast-paced nature doesn't stop at the agility course.

"Her favorite thing to do besides agility is playing on the beach with her ball," said Fortune. "Any kind of ball—soccer balls, tennis balls, frisbee. She also loves to hike with her buddies."

Finalists

1 of 3

Unable to choose just one favorite pet, our first finalist this week is 8-year-old American Cocker Spaniel Spanky.

Living with his owner Timothy Porupski in Johnson City, New York, this sweet pup is bursting with personality.

Porupski told Newsweek: "Spanky loves to play ball and frisbee and waiting under his favorite tree for squirrels. He's never caught one but he likes chasing them.

"He seems to like everyone he meets and he's very laid back."

Next up this week is rescue pup Snoopy, who owner Paul Karrer rescued from the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Salinas, California.

"We suspect she was a breeder and dumped," Karrer told Newsweek: "It is likely she spent much of her life in a cage."

Now living in her loving forever home, Snoopy recently graduated from behavior training classes.

"She is 60 pounds of pure muscle," said Karrer: "She loves to lick people's ears."

Last but definitely not least in this week's line-up is Princess the cat. A 5-year-old rescue, she lives with her owner Kate Archer in Ontario, Canada.

Archer told Newsweek: "She lets me use her for a pillow—she loves to cuddle me when I'm upset."
