Shooting on Greyhound Bus Leaves One Dead, Several Others Injured

One person was killed and several others were injured in a shooting on a Greyhound bus in California before the suspected shooter was apprehended inside a nearby Walmart, police said Wednesday night.

The Oroville Police Department began to receive 911 calls shortly after 7:30 p.m. reporting that someone was shooting inside a bus outside the AM/PM convenience store located on Oroville-Dam Boulevard and Feather River Boulevard in Oroville, a city in northern California, according to a news release from the Butte County Sheriff's Office.

Oroville police officers responded and requested assistance from the sheriff's office.

On arrival, they found five people with gunshot wounds, Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea told reporters on Wednesday night.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene despite lifesaving measures, while the surviving four were transported to local hospitals.

The suspect fled the scene before officers arrived, Honea said, but the police department began to receive 911 calls reporting that he was inside a Walmart on Cal Oak Road.

"He was acting bizarrely," Honea said. "People within the Walmart began to call 911."

Deputies and other law enforcement officers headed to the Walmart and located the suspect at the front of the store. "They were able to take him into custody without using force," he said.

The officers had "located evidence that gave them cause to believe it was the suspect involved in the shooting," the news release said.

The suspect was taken into custody and transported to the Butte County Jail, but Honea said his identity would not be released until further investigation is carried out.

The firearm used in the shooting was also recovered, Honea said. "The individual that was responsible for shooting left it on the path that he ran," he said.

Other details, including a motive for the shooting and names of the victims, were also not released on Wednesday night.

The investigation was ongoing, the sheriff's office said, and additional details would be released when available.

Honea described the shooting as an "absolute tragedy."

It's "always unfortunate when we have to deal with one of these situations," he said. "It appears as though this violence was brought to our community, doesn't appear to be any members of our community. That doesn't make it any better, but certainly, I hope my community can rest easy knowing that we are working the investigation, that the suspect is in custody, that they're not in danger.

He added: "My condolences go out to the family members of the individual who's passed away as well as for the victims in this case."

A spokesperson for Greyhound Lines said the company was working closely with local authorities.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with all who were involved as we continue to work closely with local law enforcement," the spokesperson told Newsweek.

Newsweek has contacted Walmart for additional comment.
