A man who allegedly pulled a knife on a woman at a market in Fresno, California, got more than he bargained for when one of her companions shot at him and followed him out of the store.
Muhammad Faheem, 35, managed to dodge the bullets but was later found with a cut to his hand, The Fresno Bee reported.
Faheem entered the Kearney Center's "98 & MUCH MORE" Thursday evening after drawing a knife on a man nearby, Fresno's Lt. Bill Dooley said. The man and the women inside the store were not injured in the incident.
Faheem allegedly argued with the group of women before drawing his knife on one of them. Police say it's too early to say if the woman who shot at Faheem was acting in self defence. It's not yet clear if the woman had a permit to carry a concealed firearm, according to yourcentralvalley.com.
When police arrived, the women drove away from the scene. Faheem left on foot but eventually returned and handed himself over to authorities. He faces five counts of assault with a deadly weapon.
Police soon found the four women, later saying they were cooperating with investigators. Local police urge anyone with information about the incident to call 559-621-7000.
Fresno is home to more than 500,000 people according to official estimates from 2017. An economic hub, the areas surrounding the Central Valley city are known for their significant agricultural output.
Official state statistics list 17,123 incidents of aggravated assault using a knife or cutting incident in California in 2017. Firearms were used in 19,157 aggravated assaults that year, the statistics revealed.
A student was recently stabbed twice on the University of California, Irvine campus as she walked her dog. Officials shuttered the campus, but the perpetrator was not found on site.
In February, police shot Vallejo rapper Willie McCoy dead at a Taco Bell drive-thru after staff reported a man "slumped over in the driver's seat" of a parked vehicle. Police said the man did not initially respond when police approached his car. A handgun was reportedly lying in his lap.
"The driver…of the vehicle suddenly began to move. The officers told the driver to keep his hands visible, however the driver quickly reached for the handgun on his lap. In fear for their own safety, the officers discharged their weapons at the driver," a police statement read.
