Shots Fired Into Florida Republican Party Headquarters, Authorities Said

The windows of a Republican Party headquarters in Daytona Beach, Florida, were discovered shot out on Monday morning, authorities said.

Police told The Daytona-Beach News Journal that the windows of the establishment were shot out and there were four bullet holes found inside the offices. South Daytona Police Department Captain Mark Chetham told the Orlando Sentinel that no one was injured from the shooting, but the bullets damaged the offices' front window and some of the drywall inside.

Cheatham told the Orlando Sentinel a volunteer reported the incident on Monday at the office located at 2841 South Nova Road in Daytona Beach, Florida. The shooting could have happened between Sunday afternoon and Monday morning, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

Tony Ledbetter, the chairman of Volusia County's Republican Party, told The Daytona-Beach New Journal that no other businesses of the strip mall where the headquarters is located was vandalized during the attack.

"We have never had any kind of vandalism before at a Republican headquarters," Tony Ledbetter told the publication. "It's a small strip center and no other business was vandalized, so it was obviously politically motivated."

Cheatham said police are investigating the incident and are working to retrieve surveillance video from nearby businesses to try to figure out what happened, The Daytona-Beach New Journal reported.

"At this point we can confirm that at least four rounds were fired into the building," Cheatham said. "We are working to see if we can get video from nearby businesses but so far we have no witnesses."

The shooting comes just a few days after authorities arrested Cesar Sayoc, 56, who allegedly sent multiple explosives to prominent Democratic politicians and others last week. There were at least 14 suspicious devices that were sent to high-profile Democratic politicians like former President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden and Maxine Waters. A device was also sent to the CNN office in New York City. None of the devices ever detonated and there were no injuries.

Sayoc was charged with five felony counts, including interstate transportation and illegal mailing of explosives, making threatening interstate communications, threatening a former president and assaulting federal officers, according to Reuters. His first appearance before a judge is supposed to be on Monday, according to former Assistant U.S. Attorney David Weinstein. If convicted, Sayoc could be sentenced up to 48 years in prison, according to officials.
