Manchester United's iconic former manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes José Mourinho is taking the Old Trafford club in the right direction.

Ferguson won 38 major trophies in a 26-year spell in charge of United, including 13 English Premier League titles.

On his retirement at the end of the 2012-13 season, United went through a fallow period under David Moyes and then Louis Van Gaal, before Mourinho took over in the summer of 2016.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Ferguson, 75, said Mourinho had "got to grips" with the size of the job involved in turning United around.

"The team is playing really well and he [Mourinho] has been very unlucky," Ferguson said. "He has had six 1-1 draws and in every game he has battered the opposition.

"If they hadn't had all these draws, they would be there challenging Chelsea. That is the unfortunate part but he is going to have to live with that."

United travels to the KCOM Stadium on Thursday defending a 2-0 lead from the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final, as it seeks its second trophy of Mourinho's time in charge.
