Six Royal Red Carpet Moments That Stole the Show: From Kate to Meghan

While members of the British royal family are used to taking part in high profile events with notable people, there are rare occasions when you see them rubbing shoulders with the Hollywood elite.

This usually happens when the royals attend star-studded movie premieres or awards shows, generally when the event has been organized to raise money for a charity or charities connected with the monarchy.

Over the past decade, several high profile royals have been photographed walking the red carpet at these events, commanding the attention of press and fans, even though actors, actresses or other members of the entertainment industry elite who would normally bask in the limelight may also be attending.

From the princess of Wales to the duchess of Sussex, a key attention-drawing factor for any royal red carpet is the opportunity to see regal fashion to its best advantage.

Here, Newsweek looks at six of the royals' showstopping red carpet moments.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi - 2017

Prince William and Prince Harry stopped the show during the red carpet for the London premiere of the Star Wars franchise movie The Last Jedi in 2017, making a rare joint appearance in the months before Harry's marriage to Meghan Markle.

Harry and Meghan had announced their engagement just weeks before the event which raised money for the Royal Foundation.

Dressed in elegant black tie for the evening, the princes were photographed meeting members of the cast and crew, which included a humorous exchange with a small droid who had a starring role in the movie.

Meghan Markle's first movie premiere moment as a member of the royal family and duchess of Sussex was made with Prince Harry to mark the release of Disney's remake of The Lion King.

The royal couple walked the yellow carpet in London where they met cast and crew including Beyoncé, who sang an original song on the movie's soundtrack as well as voicing the character of Nala.

For the evening, Meghan wowed in a chic black knee-length cocktail dress with sheer over-bodice and sleeves by Taiwanese-Canadian designer, Jason Wu.

King Charles and Queen Camilla added a regal element to the 2019 premiere of director Sam Mendes' World War I drama, 1917, in London, which was held in honor of the The Film and TV Charity.

The patron of the charity at the time was Queen Elizabeth II and Charles and Camilla (as Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall) represented her at the event, walking the red carpet in London's Leicester Square.

For the occasion, Camilla made a dramatic impact on the carpet wearing a long black velvet dress and jacket with a shocking pink lining.

Perhaps the most regal red carpet of the past decade, the London premiere of the James Bond movie No Time To Die, saw not two but four royal family members in attendance at the Royal Albert Hall in South Kensington.

William and Kate stood side by side with Charles and Camilla as guests of honor meeting with members of the cast, including Daniel Craig who ended his time as the character of James Bond with this instalment of the movie franchise.

For the event, Kate glittered in an all gold sequin dress by designer Jenny Packham, featuring an elegant floor-length cape falling from the shoulders.

The princess's look complemented Camilla, who opted for an ice blue gown by Bruce Oldfield, similarly glittering with small crystal embellishments and a large diamond brooch.

The most recent royal movie premiere moment took place in May 2022 ahead of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II in London.

Raising money for The Film and TV Charity, actor and producer Tom Cruise played host to the then-Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at the premiere of his Top Gun: Maverick movie in Leicester Square.

In keeping with the action drama of the movie, Kate opted for a sleek and sophisticated monochrome dress by designer Roland Mouret, styled with a slicked back hairdo and diamond star earrings.

Not to be outdone in the style stakes, William also paid a sartorial nod towards the movie, wearing a custom pair of velvet evening slippers with embroidered fighter jets on the toe.

BAFTA Awards - 2023

Prince William and Kate make a regular red carpet appearance each year at the BAFTA Film Awards in London.

As president of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, William makes a speech at the ceremony which sees stars from throughout the entertainment industry in attendance.

For the 2023 awards, the couple walked the red carpet with Kate wearing an elegant white evening gown designed by the maker of her 2011 wedding dress, Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen.

The dress had previously been worn by the princess to the 2019 awards ceremony and was slightly altered for re-use. To accessorize, Kate wore a pair of opera length black gloves and gold statement earrings, providing a modern edge to the romantic drape of the gown.
