'SNL' Mocks Jim Jordan Speaker Chaos, Lauren Boebert's Theater Antics

Saturday Night Live (SNL) brutally mocked Ohio Republican Jim Jordan's failed run for House speaker and Rep. Lauren Boebert's (R-CO) theater antics during the show's cold open.

The latest episode opened with Mikey Day as Rep. Jordan on the phone with his wife Polly following a dramatic third failed bid to become speaker, which revealed a rift in the Republican Party that holds a slim majority in the House.

"Oh, how did I lose? This is chaos. Some of us are here to actually serve the American people," Day said following the end of the phone call. "All I want to do is get Congress back to work so I can shut it down again."

Jordan, the founding chairman of the Freedom Caucus that pushed against concessions during crunch talks with Democrats to avoid a government shutdown last month, failed to replace Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as speaker.

Republicans on Friday then voted in favor of ending his bid for speaker and finding a new candidate following a closed-door meeting.

"It was an honor to be their speaker designee, but I felt it was important that we[…]get an answer to the question if they wanted me to continue in that role, so we put the question to them. They made a different decision," Jordan told reporters on Friday afternoon.

During the episode, the SNL cast embraced the chaotic situation on Capitol Hill which saw Day's Jordan receive support from George Santos (R-NY) and Boebert, portrayed by Bowen Yang and Chloe Fineman respectively, two Republicans who have been prominent in the news.

"Do you think if, one more time, I try, I could be elected speaker?" Day asked Yang.

"Well, look, I would be lying if I said yes, so yes," Yang replied, which was SNL acknowledging the indictment against the New York representative that includes allegations of fraud and lies while he was running for office in 2022.

Day then received a supportive call from Fineman playing Boebert while she appeared to be sitting in a theater.

"Jim, look, things are going exactly as planned, just keep running for speaker, and even if you don't win, great. The government shuts down and we blow this whole thing up," Fineman said before saying: "Stop, stop, stop. Oh my God!"

As Fineman was speaking, a man's hand emerged from off-screen and started to grope her chest, a reference to the Colorado representative being filmed seemingly groping her date Quinn Gallagher and in turn being groped by him while attending a theater performance in Denver on September 10.

"Sorry, are you out somewhere?" Day asked before Fineman confirmed she was at the theater watching "Aladdin."

Newsweek has contacted the offices of Jordan and Boebert for comment via email.

The SNL cold open continued with James Austin Johnson's Donald Trump paying Day a visit. "Yoo hoo, is this the loser's office?" Johnson said as he came into the room.

"Mr. President, I'm so glad you're here," Day said. "You endorsed me, and then you kind of disappeared."

"Yeah, well, that's because I prefer the Jordans who win, OK? Like the great Michael Jordan or the even greater Jordin Sparks. No Air, remember that? Now, that was a song."

Johnson then dismissed the idea that he should run for speaker, noting the real-life civil and criminal cases the former president faces, including a $250 million civil trial where he stands accused of filing fraudulent statements that inflated the value of his properties and assets.

Jordan's failed speaker bid was also lampooned during SNL's Weekend Update with co-host Michael Che commenting on the representative while a picture showed him raising his hand with his finger and thumb pinched together:

"Jim Jordan, seen here describing how he attacks the nipple, is no longer nominee for House speaker after Republicans dropped him Friday, which, by the way, he's used to as he was dropped a lot as a child," Che said.

"Potential new candidates for speaker include Tom Emmer (R-MN), Kevin Hern (R-OK), Jack Bergman (R-MI), and six more candidates who are clearly George Santos," Che concluded.
