Sofía Vergara Fires Back at Interviewer in Viral Video

Footage of Sofía Vergara calling out a reporter for mocking her accent has led to fans applauding.

The 51-year-old appeared on Spanish talk show El Hormiguero on Tuesday to promote her new Netflix show Griselda. While discussing the sitcom Modern Family—in which Vergara starred for 11 seasons—host Pablo Motos poked fun at the Colombian-American comedian's pronunciation of the show's title.

Vergara immediately clapped back, telling the 58-year-old: "Oh, because you speak better English than me? How many Emmy nominations do you have in the United States?

"How many times have they nominated you for a Golden Globe?" Vergara added.

In response, Motos said: "The Golden Globes are minor awards. So they don't matter." Newsweek has reached out to Sofía Vergara for comment via email and Pablo Motos by Instagram.

Vergara was nominated for four Emmy awards and four Golden Globes for her role as wife and mother Gloria Delgado-Pritchett in the ABC family comedy, which ran from 2009 to 2020. Vergara was also one of the highest-paid TV actresses in 2015, earning $28.5 million before tax.

Vergara's takedown of Motos was uploaded to X, formerly Twitter, by user Sergi Pi (@micoelegant), where it quickly went viral, receiving over 15 million views.

Fans praised Vergara's "savage" response of Motos on social media, while dubbing the host's behavior "lame."

"She ate that interviewer up," posted Ayman on X, while @ladidai wrote: "Get him again queen!"

"She's full of class and sass," added Imani.

"Sofia reminding everyone that talent and success speak louder than accents," commented mimicracy.

"She said it perfectly... the interviewer was just trying to make fun of her," wrote Ewurama Folake, while Millie Kerr posted: "He is a clown, end of story."

Despite the awkward moment with Motos, Vergara thanked El Hormiguero for having her on the show.

"Gracias por invitarme [thank you for inviting me]!!!! @elhormiguero #griselda," Vergara wrote on Instagram, alongside screenshots of the episode.

Motos is not the first interviewer to criticize Vergara's accent, with Ellen DeGeneres pulling a similar move in the past.

The comedian ridiculed the star's accent during a 2016 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, sparking fierce backlash online. At the time, Vergara retweeted the clip and defended DeGeneres.

"Two comedians having fun with each other to entertain," the People's Choice Award winner wrote. "I was never a victim guys, I was always in on the joke."

Vergara's new show Griselda will be released on January 25. The mini-series sees the actress transformed into real-life drug lord Griselda Blanco. Also known as the "Cocaine Godmother" and the "Black Widow," the Colombian native was a pivotal figure in Miami's underground drug scene during the 1970s and 1980s.
