Who is Shadow the Hedgehog in the 'Sonic the Hedgehog 2' Post-Credit Scene?

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 brings Sega favorites Tails and Knuckles into the film franchise, but there is one more character hidden in the movie's post-credits scene.

Just like the first Sonic film teased Tails' part in the second outing, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 did the same with an iconic villain: Shadow the Hedgehog.

Here is everything you need to know about the Sonic antagonist.

Shadow the Hedgehog is teased in the mid-credit scene for the sequel when FBI agents are shown speaking about a top secret government project in a lab, at which point Shadow is briefly seen in a test tube.

The character has his iconic black and red character design with glowing gold eyes.

Paramount has already greenlit a third installment in the Sonic franchise, so Shadow is expected to make a full appearance in the next film—more likely as a foe rather than a friend.

In the games Shadow was created by Doctor Robotnik's (Jim Carrey) grandfather Gerald as part of Project Shadow, before being was captured by the military.

The anthropomorphic hedgehog was eventually freed by Robotnik in a bid to help him conquer the world.

Shadow is a tough rival for Sonic because he is able to match him in terms of speed and can also use the Chaos Emerald for the power Chaos Control, which allows him to warp time and space.

How Shadow will use these powers in the third Sonic the Hedgehog movie is unclear. However, the second film saw Sonic and his friends agree to protect the Chaos Emeralds from Robotnik, so these may well play a part in the next outing.

Jeff Fowler, the director for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, spoke to Polygon about Shadow, describing him as a "totally a different character" to Tails or Knuckles.

The director worked on the cinematics for the character's eponymous game Shadow the Hedgehog, which came out in 2005, and he told the publication that it felt like he had come "full circle."

"We were so proud of the cinematics that we created for the game. And it was just three shots at the end of this film, but getting to do a cinematic tease for him was just a dream come true," Fowler shared.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is out in theaters now.
