The winners of the prestigious Sony World Photography Awards have been announced. Scooping the prestigious L'Iris d'Or Professional Photographer of the Year prize was Iranian photojournalist Asghar Khamseh whose powerful series Fire of Hatred focussed on the victims of acid attacks in Iran. The portraits also won the professional photographers' Contemporary Issues category.
Judges looked at a body of work from each photographer, not individual images, IB Times reports. The winners of each of the 14 categories of the professional competition were diverse, hailing from 10 different countries. Japanese photographer Kei Nomiyama, won Open Photographer of the Year, the next most distinguished category after the L'Iris d'Or.
Canadian photographer Kevin Frayer won two of the awards' categories. His series Nomadic Life Threatened on the Tibetan Plateau took the award for best photography of people, while Eagle Hunters of Western China won the environment category.
The competition's organizers received a record-breaking 230,103 photo entries from 186 countries. All the winners and shortlisted candidates' work will be displayed at London's Somerset House from April 22 to May 8.
