Chelsea great Gianfranco Zola has backed new manager Antonio Conte to succeed at Stamford Bridge despite experiencing an unconvincing start.

Conte took up the role in west London following the Euro 2016 campaign as Italy coach, but he has seen his team beaten by both Liverpool and Arsenal in consecutive weeks.

The Italian had a frustrating summer, unable to make desired signings, and is attempting to implement a new formation, but Zola has backed his fellow countryman to turn the Blues' fortunes around.

"It's an advantage that Chelsea are not in the Champions League," he reasoned.

"I think it can be a good point. It will obviously be about how quick they are going to change into the new system and how the players are going to settle. But I have confidence.

"I know Conte is a hard-working coach. I'm sure they will make the most of it. I'm positive about that."

The defeats to Chelsea's title rivals was followed by a comfortable victory over Hull City before the international break this week.

"I think the team started very well and then they had a little setback," Zola added. "But now it seems to be that they are picking up again. It's normal, it's a process and I can see the potential to get better and better."

Chelsea face champions Leicester City at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
