Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho will wait until transfer deadline day to secure the services of defender Jose Fonte from Southampton.

Fonte, a member of Portugal's victorious Euro 2016 campaign, was not part of the crucial nucleus of transfer targets Mourinho intended on bringing in this summer.

The new United manager brought in Eric Bailly, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba but is keen to add experience to his defense.

Ivorian defender Bailly has played alongside makeshift center-back Daley Blind at the heart of the defense, with Chris Smalling an option from the bench.

Mourinho does not view Fonte's signing as crucial as he did earlier in the summer due to the assured performances of his defense, according to the Manchester Evening News.

The 32-year-old has featured in the Premier League for eight years, most notably as Southampton captain for 241 games in the English top tier.

Mourinho is still keen to bring his experience to the squad but may make his move on August 31.
