Manchester United forward Henrikh Mkhitaryan was on the verge of joining Liverpool in 2013, the Armenian has revealed.

Jose Mourinho, the Manchester United manager, bought Mkhitaryan from Borussia Dortmund in the summer, and he has proved himself a key figure in the squad at Old Trafford.

But the 27-year-old has now disclosed how Brendan Rodgers tried to lure him to Anfield during his time as manager in 2013, but was beaten by Klopp, who was then manager of Dortmund.

"Two weeks later, Jurgen Klopp broke off his holiday on an island next to Denmark to come and see me in Dortmund.

"I knew he had a good reputation for working with younger players and, after we met, I felt more comfortable to sign for Dortmund. I think I made the right decision."

Mkhitaryan was named the Bundesliga players' player of the season last year before joining United.
