Man Discovers Bizarre Mouse Noise Was His Most Played Song on Spotify

A Spotify user has shared a contender for what might be the most unusual track to top anyone's personal listening charts in 2022.

Euan, who posts under the handle @grumpy_twink on Twitter, shared the results of his annual Spotify Wrapped breakdown of his most played songs on the music streaming service, and the results were surprising, to say the least.

A yearly tradition for Spotify subscribers, it's an opportunity for listeners to get an overview of the artists, songs and genres they have been enjoying over the past 12 months.

However, for Euan, it ended up being a somewhat less pleasant walk down memory lane after his Spotify Wrapped round-up revealed his most listened-to track of the year was "Mice Repel" by Ultrasonic Pest Repeller.

According to Spotify, the track, which is 3 minutes and 12 seconds of high-pitched noise, has been listened to over 186,000 times on the service. At least 292 of those plays can be attributed to Euan, who shared a clip of the reveal to Twitter captioning it: "Spotify Wrapped is out!"

The video has already been viewed over 2.2 million times, with fans quick to see the funny side and eager to share similar stories of their own. Euan told Newsweek his appreciation of the Ultrasonic Pest Repeller stems from his time as a University student in Scotland.

"I was still living in Edinburgh at the start of the year where I was a student and we had a ferocious mouse problem," he said. "Like mice droppings in our pots and pans. On our countertops. On our hob."

Eager to rid themselves of the rodent problem, Euan and his housemates hit upon a technological solution to the issue. "I read somewhere about ultrasonic sounds scaring them off," he said. "So we'd play it on the television in the living room and kitchen area."

Unfortunately, it didn't have the desired effect. "Of course, it didn't work, which is why it ended up being my most played song," he said.

In 2014, a study by the Arizona College of Agriculture and Life Sciences concluded that commercially available sonic pest devices for use in residential applications were not been shown to be effective in scientific studies.

Worse still, the mouse issue was never resolved during their time in the house."We were terrorized until we left in May," Euan said. "The landlord did nothing and the traps laid down didn't work."

Given the experience and their attempts at getting the mice out of the apartment, Euan said he "wasn't totally shocked" to see the track top his personal charts for the year.

"My main reaction was just like 'of course.' I laughed out loud at the slide they sent me so I recorded it and put it on Twitter."

Despite seeing the funny side, Euan said the sound of the track still brings back unhappy memories of "turning on the sound, switching off the lights and bolting upstairs to my bedroom."

However, he hopes others can get something out of it. He said: "I hope it teaches people that ultrasonic sound does sweet f*** all for your mouse problem."
