'Spyro Reignited Trilogy' Hands-on: A Beautiful Burst of Nostalgia

Spyro Reignited Trilogy updates the original Spyro games for today's consoles, which means enhanced visuals, audio, gameplay and controls. Do all these changes ruin the classic experience? No way, they just make it better.

I must admit I don't have any nostalgic memories of playing the original Spyro games for PlayStation. I was a Nintendo kid growing up, and never dipped my toes into Sony's line-up. So I don't have a frame of reference to compare the Reignited Trilogy to the original releases, but I can talk about how the Reignited Trilogy plays compared to other, modern games.

Immediately, it's obvious special care went into making the Spyro Reignited Trilogy look amazing. The colors pop off the screen, the textures are crisp and the animations are fluid. The level designs are all fairly basic, a holdout of remaining true to the originals, but are populated with enough eye candy to keep them interesting.

Many fans of Spyro hold the game's soundtracks in high regard, and the original audio has been remastered to better fit what composer Stewart Copeland had in mind when working on the first release. Along with the updated music, all voice lines have been re-recorded by Spyro veteran Tom Kenny. Everything sounds great, and I even had the chance to hear the new song from Copeland on the Reignited Trilogy's main menu.

As far as gameplay goes, things seem to be identical to the original ... for better and worse. The only gameplay I had was running around a level, collecting gems and breaking pots. It wasn't all that interesting, and there was virtually no challenge. I did jump to Spyro 3 and demo a skatepark area, which did offer some gameplay variety, but ultimately it was still a basic hide-and-seek mission in a different wrapper.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy has been delayed to Nov. 13, with rumors pointing to a decision to have all three Spyro games available from the game's disc as responsible for the delay. As of now, the Reignited Trilogy website states physical copies only contain information for the first Spyro , requiring players to download the other two games. It's possible the delay was due to a failed effort to get all three games on a disc instead of through an additional download.

So what do you think? Are you excited to play the Spyro Reignited Trilogy? Did you play the originals, or is this an all-new experience for you? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
