Anyone who has lived in an apartment will have at least one nightmare neighbor horror story. Whether they're noisy, send you rude texts, or scare people away with their "haunted" doll collection, a downside of apartment living is never knowing who'll move in next door.
One woman is using her unique singing voice to traumatize her neighbors, singing creepy lullabies in the stairwell of her block.
Lauren Paley, also known as the "Stairwell Siren," has been "singing since she could speak." The musical theater graduate's stunning vocals have earned her a huge following online, but it's her attempts to creep out her neighbors that have stolen the internet's hearts.
Lauren began scaring her neighbors back in October 2021, when she shared a clip of herself singing Tiny Tim's version of "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" to TikTok. The track is synonymous with the Insidious film series, and is used in the first movie to symbolize when the demon is present.
Captioned "Came in here to scare my neighbors and ended up scaring myself," in the clip Lauren's voice is amplified by the stairwell, giving it an eerie, ethereal quality. However, she is interrupted only a few words in by what sounds like someone moving nearby.
The video, which is the first in Lauren's "Scary Stairwell" series, received over 2 million views, more than 238,000 likes and over 1,000 comments from users simultaneously impressed and terrified by her vocals.
"If I was there I would be screaming," said user I eat children not childe.
"Do you want spirits? Because THAT is how you get spirits!" wrote Jamie.
"Plot twist there's no neighbors," joked Marti Zy.
Research conducted by Homes.com discovered that "general noise" is the third most common reason people argue with their neighbors. The poll also found that people living in cities were more likely to have their sleep disturbed by noisy neighbors—18 percent reported being awoken by a neighbor before 2:00 a.m., compared to 9 percent for suburban dwellers and 8 percent for people in rural areas.
However, city dwellers were also twice as likely to be friends with their neighbors compared to those living rurally. With housing and living costs rising and 18 percent of renters sharing their building with 50+ other units, getting along with your neighbors can only be a good thing.
In a video shared on April 19, Lauren brought her mom along to help spook her neighbors. Lauren sings the English version of the song "Hide and Seek" by Korean Vocaloid SeeU, inspired by the creepypasta of the same name.
Sitting behind Lauren in the stairwell, her mom creepily moves her head from side to side over Lauren's shoulder in time with the music. The video received over 45.9 million views and more than 6.5 million likes.
"Your mom is so cute, she looks like she's having so much fun," wrote officiallerion.
"She's hilarious," Lauren replied.
As well as singing tunes from horror movies and creepypastas, Lauren also covers folk songs, lullabies, Disney ballads and video game tracks, such as "The Huntress" theme from the survival game Dead by Daylight.
