GENERAL DWIGHT D. EISENHOWERIn 1941, Eisenhower became Chief of Staff for the Third Army, and a few months later he was transferred to the War Plans division in Washington D.C. “Doing as much as possible with as little as possible required setting priorities, so Eisenhower made himself an expert,” a recent New York Times article read. A flurry of leadership roles soon followed, which began in 1942; in 1943, he entered the ETO via Sicily. By D-Day, he was the Supreme Commander of the entire Allied force and oversaw Operation Overlord, commonly known as the Normandy invasion on D-Day. Eisenhower ran the war in Europe; his contemporaries Bradley, Patton and Montgomery set his plans in motion in the field. — Johnna Rizzo LIBRARY OF CONGRESS
