What is the State of the Union?

The annual speech given by presidents is called for in the Constitution, and is requested by Congress.

"In this moment of great challenge for our country, it is my solemn duty to extend this invitation for you to address a Joint Session of Congress on Thursday, March 7, 2024, so that you may fulfill your obligation under the U.S. Constitution to report on the state of our union," House Speaker Mike Johnson said in a letter to Biden in January.

Johnson and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell previously announced that Alabama Republican Senator Katie Britt will be delivering the Republican response to Biden's State of the Union.

"The Republican Party is the party of hardworking parents and families, and I'm looking forward to putting this critical perspective front and center. There is no doubt that President Biden's failed presidency has made America weaker and more vulnerable at every turn," Britt said in a statement, adding that she was grateful for the opportunity to deliver the response speech.
