Boss died by suicide at the age of 40 on Tuesday. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner told Newsweek that he was found in the room of a short-term rental apartment block in Encino, California.

News of his passing sparked a flood of tributes across social media from a number of celebrities, including Ellen DeGeneres. She took to Instagram to share a photo of herself embracing Boss on what appeared to be the set of their show.

"I'm heartbroken," the comedian captioned the image. "tWitch was pure love and light. He was my family, and I loved him with all my heart."

DeGeneres added that she "will miss" Boss, before asking her followers to send their "love and support" to his wife, Allison Holker, and their three children—Weslie, 14; Maddox, 6; and Zaia, 3.

So You Think You Can Dance alums Boss and Holker, 34, have spoken lovingly of their family on a number of occasions in the past.

Boss adopted Holker's daughter Weslie after their 2013 wedding. "It was a huge moment for me, but I was ready going into it," he told L.A. Parent in June 2017.

"I had a stepfather myself, so I could relate to the situation. I see myself as an extra source of unconditional love. I wanted to take the time to build and nurture my own personal relationship with her."

Boss and Holker went on to welcome their son, Maddox, in March 2016.

"Our MADDOX is like the beginning of all things—wonder, hope, and a dream of possibilities," Holker wrote on Instagram of her then-newborn son.

"My life and our families home is changed forever," she continued. "He blessed our lives exactly a week ago and it will never be the same again, and he has brought such a beautiful joy with him. We will let every moment sink in and last a lifetime! This is our family, our happiness and our future."

Their daughter Zaia was welcomed in November 2019, a moment that Holker revealed her other children were eagerly anticipating.

"Both of our children are so excited," Holker told Us Weekly in June 2019. "Maddox is still, I think, figuring out what is really going on with the whole scenario. We keep saying that there's going be a new baby. He talks to the baby."

At the time, Boss told Us Weekly that he was waiting on his pregnant wife "hand and foot," adding of her: "I don't know what it is, [but] she has a superpower of just being just being absolutely incredible through pregnancies. She handles it with such grace and still looks just as beautiful. It's crazy."

In a joint interview with People back in March 2020, Holker called Boss the "anchor" of their family as she also praised him for being an "amazing, supportive husband."

"I'm very grateful to have the amazing, supportive husband that I do because he just honestly jumps in at any moment to help," Holker said at the time.

"I just feel like I'm very, very, very blessed to have that kind of husband," she added. "He's my support system and our anchor for our family, for sure."

In the same interview, Boss expressed his desire to be a "strong support system" for his and Holker's three children.

"For me, fatherhood means being open and understanding my kids and being a strong support system for whatever they need, whether it's my son or my daughters," he said.

"With that being said, it's just a matter of being open and listening and making sure that I'm paying attention to them—paying attention to what I need to protect them from the world and that kind of thing," he added.

During a joint November appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Boss and Holker opened up about their relationship and their hopes of expanding their family in the future.

"I love the little babies, I love them. It's a constant conversation," Boss said.

"I think we would love to start trying for another one," added Holker.

On Wednesday, days after the couple marked their ninth wedding anniversary, Holker released a statement confirming the unexpected death of her husband.

She said in a statement to People that the TV personality "lit up every room he stepped into," adding: "He valued family, friends and community above all else and leading with love and light was everything to him. He was the backbone of our family, the best husband and father, and an inspiration to his fans.

"To say he left a legacy would be an understatement, and his positive impact will continue to be felt," Holker continued. "I am certain there won't be a day that goes by that we won't honor his memory. We ask for privacy during this difficult time for myself and especially for our three children."

"Stephen, we love you, we miss you, and I will always save the last dance for you," Holker added in a personal message to the late dancer.
