Body-Camera Video Shows Sacramento Police Shoot and Kill Unarmed Black Man

The Sacramento Police Department has released the video and audio of the night an unarmed black man was shot and killed when police mistook his cell phone for a weapon.

Stephon Alonzo Clark, 22, was in the backyard of his home when two police officers fired multiple shots. The officers were responding to a 911 call that a person was breaking into vehicles nearby, authorities said.

The disturbing footage of the officer's body cameras shows the two officers looking for a suspect. The first officer shouts "Over here" when he spots movement behind a house. The cop then yells, "Hey, show me your hands" and follows Clark into the backyard of his home.

The officer yells at Clark to stop running, and when he finally catches up to Clark he yells again to show his hands. The first officer appears yells that the 22-year-old has a gun, asks for him to show his hands again and then fires multiple shots at him.

The Sacramento Sheriff's Department helicopter team (STAR) also responded to the call and told the officers they had seen the suspect pick up a toolbar to break a window into someone else's home. In the video from the helicopter, it shows Clark hopping over a fence into his own yard. The video does not appear to show Clark breaking into another residence.

A statement from the police department said the officers believed Clark was pointing a firearm at them, which caused them to fire their weapons.

"Fearing for their safety, the officers fired their duty weapons striking the suspect multiple times. The involved officers held their position for approximately five minutes, until additional officers arrived. Officers approached the suspect, handcuffed him and began life-saving efforts," the department's statement said.

Clark's cell phone was found at the scene but there were no weapons, police told the Sacramento Bee.

Clark, whose legal name is Stephan Clark, was the father of two young sons ages 1 and 3, according to his family. The stay-at-home dad was an alumn of Sacramento High School. He loved sneakers, football and playing video games.

A Gofundme page has been created to help the family pay for Clark's funeral costs. The fundraiser has already raised over $16,900 of its $30,000 goal.

"It's overwhelming, I appreciate all the support. We're doing the funeral, we're paying for lawyers taking care of his family. We cannot thank everyone enough for all of the support," said Stevante, Clark's brother.

Stevante and the rest of the Clark family want justice and reform after what happened to his Stephon. He vowed he will continue to push for change.

"I'm going to keep going for him, and I won't stop until there is change," said Stevante.

The two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave without pay, which is department policy, according to the statement.
