How Taylor Swift's Knowledge of Football Inspires Patrick Mahomes

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors

Taylor Swift is not only a mastermind in the music industry — she's becoming one in football, according to Patrick Mahomes.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback has gotten to know Swift through her relationship with his teammate Travis Kelce. Swift, who has also become close friends with Patrick's wife Brittany Mahomes, has been dating Kelce since late summer 2023. The singer-songwriter was a constant fixture at nearly every Chiefs game from September 2023 through their Super Bowl win in February.

"When [Taylor is] talking about football, when she's learning it, you can see her business mind putting it together. It's almost like she's trying to become a coach," Patrick shared in his profile of Time's Most 100 Influential People in the World, which was published on Tuesday, April 16. " [She asks], 'Why can't you try this, this and this?' She's asking the right questions."

Patrick, who has repeatedly gushed over Swift in interviews, also called her the "most down-to-earth" star he's ever met while commending her voracious work ethic.

"She's never not working," he said. In 2024 alone, Swift has traveled to Australia and Asia on her Eras Tour, made Grammys history with her fourth Album of the Year win, is dropping her highly-anticipated eleventh album on Friday, and will be finishing up her final run of the Eras Tour in Europe, the U.K., the U.S., and Canada — all while rooting for the Chiefs along the way.

In December 2023, Patrick opened up about Kelce and Swift's relationship, calling the 14-time Grammy winner "part of Chiefs Kingdom now."

"At first, I feel like everybody kind of stayed away, just let [Kelce] do what he was doing," the NFL star explained on CBS Mornings about the Chiefs' reaction to the beginning of Kelce and Swift's romance. "And then he started bringing Taylor around and he realized how cool a person she was and she is. And so for us, I mean there was a couple jokes here and there at the beginning, but now — she's just part of Chiefs Kingdom now."

Patrick, who noted that Kelce is "lucky enough to be with a … great woman," has also taken his own inspiration from Swift.

"It's been cool to kind of interact with her and see, 'cause she's top-tier at her profession and see how she drives and she how she becomes that," the quarterback shared. "It's really cool to hear about and see."
