Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar and the Weeknd Get a Ton of Grammy Nominations

Taylor Swift is up against two of her friends and occasional co-performers, rapper Kendrick Lamar and R&B sensation the Weeknd, for the 2016 Grammy Awards.

The three stars, each crossover artists representing his or her own corner of the 2015 pop landscape, lead the newly announced pack of Grammy nominees.

Lamar received eight nominations for his acclaimed, genre-bending opus To Pimp a Butterfly, while Swift and the Weeknd garnered six nominations each. Swift managed to land nominations in the album of the year, song of the year and record of the year categories, for her monstrously successful 2014 album, 1989, and the single "Blank Space."

Rounding out the album of the year category are To Pimp a Butterfly, the Weeknd's Beauty Behind the Madness, Chris Stapleton's Traveller and Alabama Shakes's Sound and Color. Swift and Lamar, who collaborated on her "Bad Blood" video, were each nominated for that award in 2014, losing out to Daft Punk's Random Access Memories.

In the record of the year category, the Weeknd's summer hit "Can't Feel My Face" is up against D'Angelo, Mark Ronson, Ed Sheeran and (once again) Swift.

Recently ascendant Southern rock group Alabama Shakes garnered an enviable four nominations, as did Drake, Kanye West and Florence Welch, of Florence + the Machine.

Since the Grammys' eligibility period runs from October 1, 2014, through September 30, 2015, recent releases by Justin Bieber and Adele, whose album 25 has dominated the charts since late November, were not eligible for nomination.

But inevitably, there are snubs. Carly Rae Jepsen's acclaimed third album, E•MO•TION, received zero nominations, as did Lana Del Rey's Honeymoon. Rapper Fetty Wap was, somewhat strangely, left out of the best new artist category, though some might see that as a blessing. And Sleater-Kinney's reunion album, No Cities to Love, was left out of the best rock album and best alternative album categories.

The Grammy Awards will take place February 15 in Los Angeles. Here's the complete list of nominees:
