Taylor Swift Just Seemingly Confirmed This Fan Theory About 'The Tortured Poets Department'

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors

Swifties have figured it out once again. Fans have theorized that Taylor Swift directly connected her new album The Tortured Poets Department with her previous album Midnights — and she gave her stamp of approval by liking a post on social media.

"The first lyric from the first song on the album 'Fortnight' reflects the last song on 'Midnights,'" fan Patty Eminger shared in an Instagram video posted on Friday, April 19.

Eminger pieced this together, considering in the #21 track on Midnights, "Hits Different", the last line reads, "Is that your key in the door / Is it OK? / Is it you? / Or have they come to take me away?"

And, the first line in the #1 track on TTPD, "Fortnight", says, "I was supposed to be sent away / But they forgot to come and get me."

After pointing out the parallels in both songs, the fan continued to voice his opinion on the album itself. "The album is just pure mania, and I heard someone describe it as 'Tolerate It' [from 2020's 'Evermore'] on meth, and I was like, 'Perfect, just what I wanted.'"

The singer "liked" the video, seemingly showing her approval for the theory. Fans were quick to point this out in the comment section.

"Taylor Swift liked this 😂👏🙌!! You made it," one user wrote. Another said, "SHE LIKED THIS IM CRYINGGG."

"If Taylor Swift liking this doesn't validate you, I don't know what will 😂 you got the trophy for pointing this out!" another one gushed.

Someone else chimed in with, "Taylor liked it so this interpretation is kinda approved by the chairman herself!"

This theory has also sparked further speculation—as Swifties love to uncover hidden messages woven into her songs. "AND Midnights is record of 13 sleepless nights throughout her life and TTPD starts with fortnight which is the 14th!," another fan theorized.

"Also in The Alchemy 'I'm back. The hospital was a drag, worst sleep that I ever had.' The theme of the album. I laughed out loud. Amazing," another user shared.
