Teen Beats Dad to Death, Assaults Mom During Drug Rage: Police

A 19-year-old Virginia man is facing charges after he killed his father and injured his mother while intoxicated on an "unknown narcotic," local police told Newsweek.

Juan Pina-Ortiz, of Woodbridge, Virginia, has been charged with murder, assault and battery of a law enforcement officer and domestic assault and battery over the October 16 incident that left the teenager's father dead, Prince William County Police Department (PWCPD) told Newsweek on Wednesday afternoon. It was unclear at the time of publication if Pina-Ortiz had retained an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

The suspect's father, identified by police as 51-year-old Juan Pina-Recendiz, was pronounced dead at the scene from "blunt force trauma sustained during the altercation with his son," PWCPD Lieutenant Jonathan Perok said in a statement. The investigation determined the teen had also assaulted his mother, identified as a 52-year-old woman, who suffered minor injuries during the altercation early Monday morning.

Perok told Newsweek that he was "not aware of a weapon used" in the attack on the parents. The motive for the violence is unclear.

Shortly before 1:30 a.m., police responded to a call about a domestic dispute at a residence on Shannon Court in Woodbridge, Perok said. The 911 caller said Pina-Ortiz was destroying property inside the home and possibly under the influence of an unknown narcotic.

When officers arrived at the home, the suspect was "observed unclothed and actively assaulting another individual," later determined to be his father, according to PWCPD. Perok told Newsweek that the narcotic the teenager allegedly was using at the time of the altercation was "not confirmed" at the time of publication.

Pina-Ortiz initially ignored police commands and continued to assault his father before briefly retreating further into the home, Perok said. At one point, the suspect reemerged and advanced toward police in an "agitated state" and grabbed the vest of a K-9 officer. The officer's K-9 was deployed and bit the Pina-Ortiz, who was then subsequently detained. The teen suffered minor injuries during the apprehension and was treated at an area hospital before being released to police custody, according to PWCPD. The K-9 handler was not injured.

Pina-Ortiz was arraigned at the Prince William General District Court on Tuesday and is being held without bond, according to online court records. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for December 12.
