Teenage Girl Dead After Apparent Overdose at High School—Police

A teenage girl has died of an apparent overdose at a Los Angeles high school, police said.

Officers were called to Helen Bernstein High School in Hollywood at around 9 p.m. on Tuesday after a man said his stepdaughter had suffered an overdose on campus, according to the Los Angles Police Department.

"A parent had located his missing stepdaughter at the high school. She appeared to be a victim of an overdose and told the parent that a friend was also in the women's restroom," said the LAPD news release.

The man found a school employee and entered the women's restroom, where he discovered that his stepdaughter was unresponsive. He administered aid until paramedics arrived and pronounced her dead, according to police. Her name has not been released.

The girl's friend was transported to hospital, where she is in a stable condition, the LAPD said.

The Los Angeles Fire Department had responded to two other calls of possible overdoses of teenagers in Lexington Park near the school, which is on the 1300 block of N. Wilton Place.

"It is believed that the overdose victims are students of Bernstein and local high schools," the LAPD said.

Police believe all the victims bought what they thought was Percocet, an opioid, at Lexington Park in Hollywood. Officers are investigating whether the pills were laced with fentanyl.

"It is common for drug dealers to lace pills with fentanyl. Fentanyl is highly dangerous and deaths from this drug have increased in recent years," the LAPD said.

In a statement posted on Twitter, the Los Angeles Unified School District said: "We are working with the Los Angeles Police Department, the lead agency on this ongoing investigation, and at this point and due to confidentiality issues, we have no further information to share."

The statement added that the school would be open on Wednesday with grief counselors on-site and available to support students and employees.

"As we work together with LAPD to uncover the details of this tragic situation, our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of both students."
