Police in Atascocita Forest, Texas reported on social media that a 17-year-old girl accidentally discharged an AK-47 assault rifle, shooting herself in the leg Tuesday afternoon.

The unnamed victim was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital and is reportedly in critical condition, a Harris County Constable Precinct 4 spokesman tweeted.

Officer Mark Herman tweeted that "preliminary reports and witnesses state that two females and a juvenile male were handling an AK-47 that the male took from his home" when the 17-year-old girl accidentally shot herself.

"Constable Deputies have recovered and secured the weapon and the area is SAFE!," added Herman in the latest update. Herman added that investigators will turn over the case to the local district attorney's office "for possible charges."

On Twitter, Herman noted a "heavy police presence in the 4000 block of Wintergreen Drive/Woodland Hills." He wants the public to avoid the area, if possible, as the investigation is ongoing.

Atascocita Forest is located north of Houston.

The shooting allegedly took place near Whispering Pines Elementary School, part of the Humble Independent School District located in Atascocita, which borders the Humble suburb to the east.
