HBO's suspenseful series True Detective returns with Season 3 on Sunday. Like the first two of the anthology's installments, the third season, starring Oscar-winning Mahershala Ali, is expected to be loaded with gripping mystery and enthralling plot twists.
Spanning over three different time periods, Season 3 of True Detective will follow Arkansas state detective Wayne Hays as he attempts to unlock the 1980 case of two missing children, Will (Phoenix Elkin) and Julie Purcell (Lena McCarthy), whose parents Tom (Scoot McNairy) and Lucy Purcell (Mamie Gummer) have a penchant for fighting. Flash forward some 35 years later, a retired Hays is questioned about the missing kids and recalls the unsolved mystery surrounding their disappearance. Plagued by all the memories, Hayes revisits a number of key moments of the case, including new developments that led to he and his ex-partner Roland West (Stephen Dorff) being subpoenaed in 1990, according to the show's synopsis.
Scott Stephens, who executively produced all three seasons of True Detective, told The Hollywood Reporter that Season 3, much like the first season of the anthology, will be as intense of a character study as it is a mystery. "The two things that stand out year to year are the strength of the characters involved and the location, which is always a pivotal part of the storytelling," he said.
Season 3 was shot in northwest Arkansas and sees the Ozarks as the prime setting for the crime.
The first two hour-long episodes of the season will premiere on HBO on Sunday, starting with the season opener, titled, "The Great War and Modern Memory," at 9 p.m. and episode 2's "Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye" immediately following at 10 p.m. ET.
True Detective is available for live stream on the HBO Go app, while viewers with Hulu's Live TV subscription can access the episode in real-time there. Those with standard Hulu packages will be able to watch the episode after it airs on-demand.
