40 TV Shows Coming Out in 2022 to Get Excited About

2022 is already looking set to be a great year for TV, with exciting shows coming from Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, HBO and more.

The year looks like a particularly exciting one for fantasy fans. September will see the release of Amazon Prime Video's epic take on The Lord of the Rings, while HBO is returning to the Game of Thrones well for Targaryen prequel House of the Dragon. Plus, the year is being kicked off with a Harry Potter reunion.

Wizards and elves not your thing? 2022 also looks set to be a strong year from true crime dramas, with Hulu releasing its Elizabeth Holmes series The Dropout, Netflix delving into the Anna Delvey deception, and HBO Max exploring a real-life axe murder in Love and Death.

While TV fans are ready to say hello to these new shows, we also have to say goodbye to some big series. Grace and Frankie, Derry Girls and Peaky Blinders are among the shows ending in 2022, but which are sure to go out with a bang.

The cast of "How I Met Your Father." The show comes to Hulu in early 2022. Hulu

How I Met Your Father (January 18)

How I Met Your Mother ended on a sour note, but perhaps standalone spin-off How I Met Your Father might help make up for that. Starring Hillary Duff as lead character Sophie, the show will follow her as she tells her kids how she came to meet their father. Kim Cattrall also plays the future version of Sophie, which is also quite exciting.

The Gilded Age (January 24)

Tiffany Haddish is a no-nonsense Detective Danner in this whodunnit which is sure to be filled with nonsense based on the cast alone. Lily James and Sebastian Stan look unrecognizable as actress and former Playboy model Pamela Anderson and Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee in Hulu's Pam & Tommy. Also in the cast is Seth Rogen as Rand Gauthier and Nick Offerman as Milton Ingley, Gauthier's accomplice.

Inventing Anna (February 11)

In 2019, Anna Sorokin made headlines after she was exposed as successfully defrauding members of New York's elite, banks, airlines, hotels by pretending to be a German heiress by the name of Anna Delvey. Based on the New York Magazine article "How Anna Delvey Tricked New York's Party People" by journalist Jessica Pressler, the story of the convicted fraudster is coming to the small-screen in February 2022 on Netflix, with Bridgerton producer Shonda Rhimes at the helm and starring Ozark's Julia Garner as Sorokin.

Knowing Villanelle, it isn't looking likely.

The Dropout (March 3)

Bridgerton Season 2 (March 25)

Daphne has had her shot at love and now it's time for Anthony to try his luck. Jonathan Bailey returns as the rakish Viscount while Simone Ashley joins the cast as no-nonsense Kate, and the new episodes are sure to be just as entertaining as the first.

The Last of Us (early 2022)

Conversations with Friends (April)

Normal People was one of the TV treasures of 2020, so anticipation is high for Hulu's second adaptation of Sally Rooney's novels about millennial ennui. Will Joe Alwyn become the new breakout sex symbol a la Paul Mescal? Only time will tell.

The Flight Attendant Season 2 (spring)

The Lord of the Rings (September 2)

The word iconic doesn't do justice to The Lord of the Rings trilogy, but it applies just the same. Peter Jackson's adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy novels are as precious to cinephiles as the ring is to Gollum, and Amazon Prime Video will return to the universe for a new TV show. Set thousands of years before the trilogy, in the Second Age of Middle Earth, the show will no doubt be a wonder to behold.

The Crown Season 5 (November)

Two years later, The Crown Season 5 is set to grace our screens in November 2022. Andor (mid-to-late 2022)

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story may have ended with the deaths of the crew of its titular ship, but that doesn't mean it was the end, not for Cassian Andor at least. Luna will be joined by Stellan Skarsgård and Fiona Shaw, while Forest Whittaker is also confirmed to return as Saw Gerrera.

House of the Dragon (TBA)

The Game of Thrones legacy continues in this prequel series which delves deeper into the Targaryen legacy. Because a British accent is for some reason more believable in this fantasy land, the likes of Matt Smith (The Crown), Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill) and Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel) are some of the stars leading the cast. Hopefully the budget is big enough to CGI some dragons into the show from the get go.

Barry Season 3 (TBA)

Bill Hader's surprise turn as a hitman-turned-acting protégé has gained legions of fans who'll be thrilled to see Barry is finally back for a third season. Henry Winkler is also back as the eccentric acting coach Gene Cousineau, but he's now armed with the truth about who Barry is.

Season 1 of the reboot had a new generation of Gossip Girl followers hooked and Season 2 is on the way in 2022.

Love & Death (TBA)

The latest show from Big Little Lies creator David E. Kelley, Love and Death looks set to be a darker show based on the real life axe murder in 1980 Texas. She-Hulk (TBA)

The MCU is set to roll on into 2022 and beyond, with a new set of supers getting their own Disney+ shows. To us, the most exciting of these is She-Hulk, in which Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) makes her on screen debut in what is being billed as a comedy legal drama (!) We are very ready for Disney+'s take on The Good Fight.

Obi-Wan Kenobi (TBA)

The Star Wars prequel trilogy may get a bad rap, but Lucasfilm are hoping to make up for it with a Disney+ series following Obi-Wan Kenobi in the aftermath of Revenge of the Sith. Ewan McGregor will reprise his role as the Jedi master, while Hayden Christensen is also confirmed to return as Darth Vader. Other cast members set to appear include Kumail Nanjiani, Moses Ingram and Rupert Friend.

Ted Lasso Season 3 (TBA)

The third, and potentially final season of this darling of a show is likely to return on Apple TV+ this summer. The series will air first on the BBC in the U.K. and will make its way to Netflix in the U.S. at a later date. Plot details for the highly-anticipated sixth season have been kept largely under wraps but fans can expect to see Tommy Shelby hunt down the 'black cat' who thwarted his plans to assasinate Oswald Mosley in the Season 5 finale.

Top Boy (TBA)

Rapper Drake stepped in and saved the small (critically acclaimed) British drama Top Boy and brought it to world via Netflix in 2019. Ever since, fans have been counting down the days to Season 2 (technically Season 4). Will Dushane and Jamie work together? Will Sully stay on the straight and narrow? Is Dris dead or alive? What about undercover officers Lee and Sarah? Will they close in on the Summerhouse Estate? Expect all of these burning questions to be answered very soon.

Russian Doll Season 2 (TBA)

Russian Doll is probably the best show ever made by Netflix, a perfect "sweet birthday baby" of a series in which Natasha Lyonne relives the same birthday party over and over again. Though Season 2 has big shoes to fill, the addition to Annie Murphy to the cast bodes well.

The Good Fight Season 6 (TBA)

Six years in, The Good Fight remains the most underrated show on television. Will 2022 finally be the year where the Paramount+ series gets the recognition it deserves? Probably not, but Season 6 is coming, and is likely to give those in the know more legendary actor cameos, wild plot swings and scenes where Christine Baranski lets out that laugh.

Grace and Frankie Season 7 (TBA)

The Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin show may be Netflix's longest running show, but it is set to bow out in 2022 with its final 12 episodes. Expect tears, laughs, and 80-year-olds talking about sex before we say goodbye to Grace and Frankie for one last time.
