Who Is UNLV Shooting Suspect? Everything We Know About Las Vegas Shooter

A gunman is dead after reports of an active shooter at a Las Vegas university campus involving "multiple victims," according to local police.

Around 12:40 p.m. PST, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) posted on X, formerly Twitter, that the assailant who struck the Las Vegas branch of the University of Nevada (UNLV) on Wednesday afternoon was "located and is deceased."

Additional details about the shooter were not available at the time of publication. LVMPD Sheriff Kevin McMahill said the department would not release the identity of the suspected gunman until the person's next of kin was notified.

UNLV Police Chief Adam Garcia said in an update at an evening press conference that two campus officers got into a shootout with the suspect, killing him.

In an earlier update, LVMPD said that three victims, in addition to the shooter, have been confirmed dead.

"According to our investigators at the scene, we have three deceased victims and one additional victim in critical condition at a local hospital," Las Vegas police posted on X.

Shortly after noon PST, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department posted on X that officers responded to "preliminary reports" of a shooting near Frank and Estella Beam Hall (BEH) at the Las Vegas branch of the University of Nevada (UNLV). The building, which is on Maryland Parkway, is home to the Lee Business School at UNLV, according to the university's website.

Police said the shooting started on the fourth floor of BEH and that the shooter went to several floors before he was killed outside the building.

Newsweek reached out via email on Wednesday to the LVMPD and UNLV for comment.

In an update around 1:30 p.m. local time, McMahill said there was "no further threat" and that a "number of victims have been transported to area hospitals."

McMahill said the motive was unknown at the time and urged the public to avoid the area because of the "active investigation" into the situation.

Around 1:45 p.m. UNLV posted on X that there is a family reunification center at the Las Vegas Convention Center, North Hall.

UNLV will be closed for the rest of the week, according to university police.

The campus is about three miles from the location of the deadliest mass shooting committed by an individual in U.S. history, where a gunman in 2017 opened fire from the window of a suite at the Mandalay Bay Hotel into the crowd at the Route 91 music festival. The shooting claimed the lives of 58 people and injured more than 500 others.
