Video: Chris Hemsworth Picks Up First-Time American Hitchhiker, Takes Him by Helicopter to Destination

The Australian actor Chris Hemsworth surprised an American hitchhiker by not only picking him up in his car, but then taking him to his private helicopter and flying him to his destination.

Scott Hildebrand, a musician from Chicago, was waiting for a car to pick him up in Brisbane and take him to Byron Bay, a popular surf spot on Australia's east coast. But he could hardly have envisaged the ride that came his way.

Avengers star Hemsworth saw Hildebrand standing on the side of the road and welcomed him on board, along with his friend and personal trainer Luke Zocchi who was also in the car.

"Picked up a hitchhiker, wasn't a serial killer which we were stoked about and just happened to be a kick ass musician Scott Hildebrand," Hemsworth wrote on Instagram, uploading a video of the encounter.

"Just landed in Brizzy (Brisbane) and we've just seen a guy who is hitchhiking to Byron," Zocchi says in the video. "We're going to Byron, we'll give him a lift," Hemsworth adds. "Little does he know we're getting a chopper," Luke says.

Hildebrand told them that he had recently arrived in Australia from Mexico. His website also says that he is touring in Australia.

The musician was stunned when it became clear that they were driving to a waiting helicopter.

"Chip in for the gas all right, it's four grand," Hemsworth quipped as they approached it.

In a subsequent interview with Australian radio station Nova, Hildebrand gave his side of the encounter.

"I was at the airport terminal in Brisbane trying to get back to Byron and I just thought I'd try to hitchhike. I've actually never hitchhiked before," he said, according to Courier Mail.

"I was out there for 15 minutes and they pulled up in this car … a black van. The one guy Luke was filming and at the time and I was like I don't know why they are filming, just on their phone, but I was kind of unsure of the whole situation."

Hildebrand also admitted that he did not recognize Hemsworth.

"All of a sudden we pull up to the helipad. They're like 'ever flown in a helicopter Scotty?' and I couldn't believe it and that's when I was like 'who are you guys?" he said.

"Luke was like, 'that's Chris Hemsworth, Thor.' And I was like 'what?' I couldn't believe it."

Hemsworth had recently finished filming the new Men in Black movie in Italy, according to the Courier Mail.

"It was beautiful. We saw whales and dolphins. It was magical," Hildebrand said of their journey.
