Five years ago protestors were arm in arm in Tahrir Square taking part in the popular uprising that ended the 30-year reign of Hosni Mubarek. Today the streets are quiet.

After the upheaval and violence in 2011 that helped spark the "Arab Spring" across the region, Murarek is still in prison, but so is the first democratically elected president after the military regained power in 2013. With General Abdel Fattah El Sisi firmly in control, few activists dare take to the streets of Cairo these days.

Today we look back on the events that changed Egypt's political landscape through the lenses of Reuters photographers.
