A man remains in a Texas jail Friday after crashing his car into a pickup truck and fleeing the scene with the driver of the truck clinging to his dented hood.
Police in Bryan said Andrew Allan Bush, 50, was intoxicated when he crashed into the rear end of Zane Wallace's pickup truck Thursday afternoon. After the crash, Wallace said he got out of his vehicle to check the damage and that's when he saw Bush barrelling toward him.
Bush sped toward Wallace, a Texas A&M student, who jumped on the hood of Bush's car. In a Facebook video captured by a local resident, Wallace clung to the hood of the car as Bush swerved and tried jarring Wallace loose for nearly a half mile at 50 mph.
"I very easily could have been killed in that whole ordeal. And he just didn't care," Wallace said in an interview with KBTX. "I remember banging on the window of the car while I'm holding on screaming let me off let me off and he just shakes his head no," Wallace said.
Bush finally came to a stop at an Exxon convenience store at the intersection of Boonville Road and Briarcrest Parkway.
The Bryan-College Station Eagle reported that Bush was finally boxed in by other cars at the Booneville Road-Copperfield Drive intersection. Bryan Police arrived and took Bush into custody.
A video captured by College Station resident Steve Christian showed the scene of the accident and Wallace clinging to the hood.
"I wanted to help him, but I couldn't safely do it and I saw that other people were coming to his aid," Christian said. "I was wondering what could have gone through the mind of the Charger driver to cause him to do that? And to find out he was under the influence does make a lot of sense."
Bryan Police officer Kelley McKethan said the actions of both Wallace and the good Samaritan drivers helping out not only aided the situation, but seem unrealistic.
"My reaction was 'wow.' It was unreal. It seemed unreal. You just see you don't normally see people riding on the hood of a car," McKethan said. "Trying to get the guy to slow down so that he could get off the car safely, it just speaks volumes to those witnesses and those people who helped him out and we really appreciate what they did."
Bush was booked into the Brazos County jail and charged with driving while intoxicated. This was his second DWI offense, which is a Class A misdemeanor. Bush could face up to a $4,000 fine and a year in jail. Bryan PD also charged Bush with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and failure to leave information.
According to Bryan PD, Bush admitted to drinking the malt liquor blend Four Loko, which combines alcohol and caffeine, according to the beverage's nutrition facts label.
Bush remained in jail Friday afternoon and is being held on $18,000 bail, the total amount for all charges against him.
"I can wish bad things on him all day until the cows come home," Wallace told KBTX. "But at the end of the day I'm still breathing and I just want him to get better and get the help he needs."
Bryan-College Station is the main metropolitan area in the Brazos Valley in the South Central part of the state, about an hour and a half north of Houston and three hours south of Dallas. College Station is the home of Texas A&M University.
