Lezley McSpadden, Gwen Carr, Wanda Johnson and Sybrina Fulton, whose sons were killed in racially charged incidents with police officers or an armed neighbor, are members of a group sometimes known as the "Mothers of the Movement." Several of them spoke in support of Hillary Clinton at the Democratic National Convention.

Beyoncé has been outspoken in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. She referenced the civil rights struggle in her "Formation" video and last month penned an open letter in support of slain black men Alton Sterling and Philando Castile. Several of the mothers were featured in her Lemonade visuals holding images of their sons.

On the red carpet, Bey also posed with 13-year-old actress Quvenzhané Wallis, best known for Beasts of the Southern Wild, as well as musicians Chloe x Halle and model Ava Clark.

Beyoncé's performance at the VMAs is one of the most anticipated of the evening.
