Footage has revealed the dramatic moment when two police officers saved a kangaroo from drowning in Australia.

Members of the public called the police to tell them the marsupial was struggling in the water at Safety Beach on the Mornington Peninsula in the Australian state of Victoria on Saturday afternoon.

The animal returned to land, where a bystander covered him in a blanket. However, he hopped back into the sea and started going under the waves numerous times.

That was when Sergeants Christopher Russo and Kirby Tonkin of Victoria Police raced into action.

"There was no conversation at all, we both knew that's what needed to be done so we just got to it," Russo said, according to The Age.

"The kangaroo had been out in the water and was quite distressed," he added.

Once they helped it out of the water, Russo described how he performed chest compressions on the animal to revive him.

"I grabbed his tail and Kirby cradled his head and dragged him onto the beach and cleared his lungs to get the water out of him. Then we just started to push on his chest and he started breathing again and I could feel a heartbeat.

"Kangas can swim but they're not particularly good at it. He'd aspirated and was in the middle of drowning, if we hadn't have acted within the next 30 seconds, it might have been a different story," Russo said.

The kangaroo was taken to the police station and then was picked up by wildlife services. He was said to be good spirits and lucky to be alive given the amount of saltwater he swallowed.

"We will let him recover at his own pace but he has a paddock full of grass and lots of water to drink and he seems very happy with that," said Michelle Thomas, director of the local Animalia Wildlife Shelter said, according to the BBC.
