Watch Senior Golden Retriever Refuse To Obey Owner: 'Rules No Longer Apply'

The Internet has applauded a dignified senior dog who hilariously refused to sit for treats in a viral video.

Sydney, a 10-year-old golden retriever who lives in Canada has captured hearts online in a video with over 676,000 views.

"Sydney's nickname is Syd the Kid because she was originally the baby of the family," Syd's owner Rob Mote told Newsweek. "We had three older dogs who all passed away between 2020 and 2022 from old age or illness. We didn't want Syd to be alone, so we adopted a puppy from our local shelter."

After finding that Sydney found the energy of a puppy a little too much, they adopted another so that the younger dogs could keep themselves occupied.

Now, Mote describes Syd as "a reluctant top dog of the family," explaining that: "She has the perfect grumpy older sister facial expressions down to a T."

In true big sister fashion, Syd makes it clear she won't be treated in the same way as her younger siblings—something that is particularly obvious when they're asked to sit for a treat.

While her eager-to-please younger siblings sit and wait for their treat, Syd is having none of it as she looks up at her owner.

Alongside the TikTok video, the caption joked: "The rules no longer apply to me."

"Sitting on cue is one of the first things most people want to teach their dog; it's handy for focus, can be part of the method to stop jumping up at people, and is considered good manners for a puppy or adult dog to sit before a meal or having their lead put on," dog trainer Joe Nutkins told Newsweek. "However, it can put a fair amount of stress into the rear leg joints especially if practiced lots every day."

As a result, it is little surprise that 10-year-old Syd doesn't feel like sitting—and owner Mote explained that they no longer ask Syd to sit if she is uncomfortable.

"Syd does have some arthritis and bad hips so we never force her to sit, but it's just so funny when the puppies try and mimic her and decide they don't want to sit either," he explained. "Syd often gets treats delivered to her on the couch while the puppies have to follow the rules."

In over 390 comments people were in stitches at Syd's refusal to sit.

"When the face is gray, they get their way," said dustofsnow21. User tkat721 joked: "You let that senior citizen be! Lifetime achievement rewards have been unlocked."

"We love our dogs, and we find the dynamic between a much older dog and two crazy energetic puppies to be very entertaining," Mote said. "We want to share all the laughs we get in our house watching their antics and we love making videos that people find entertaining."
