Watch Taylor Swift, Barack Obama, Kesha on Stonewall Day Livestream

Pride Live's third annual Stonewall Day event is almost here, and this year, it's a little bit different. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the event will be held online—with various celebrities speaking and performing while in self-quarantine—rather than at the Stonewall Inn, a historic bar in New York City.

Taylor Swift, Barack Obama, Demi Lovato, Kesha, Hayley Kiyoko, Christian Siriano, Katy Perry and more are all expected to speak or perform at the event, in celebration of Pride Month.

So how can you watch live? The event begins Friday at 12:45 p.m. ET, and will be streaming until 3 p.m. ET. You can find the live stream on Pride Live's Facebook Page or YouTube.

Stonewall Day remembers the Stonewall riots, which began on June 28, 1969, when police raided the Stonewall Inn. The bar location was illegally serving alcohol, but the police action came at a tense moment in the city for members of the LGBTQ community, who felt that they were being targeted and singled out by cops. As the New York Times notes, around the time of the Stonewall showdown, police had raided five gay bars in Greenwich Village. At the Stonewall Inn, the raid turned into a riot when patrons began fighting with police, and days of protests for LGBTQ rights followed.

It was the next year, 1970, that New York's first Pride Parade set out to celebrate the community.

In June 2019, ahead of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, then-New York City Police Commissioner James O'Neill issued an official apology on behalf of the NYPD, for the police officers' conduct that night in 1969. "The actions and the laws were discriminatory and oppressive, and for that, I apologize," he said.

This year, Stonewall Day comes during a dramatic moment in United States history. Protests across the country have sparked public conversations about police brutality, racial injustice and systemic inequality.

"From Marsha P. Johnson's revolution at Stonewall to the recent murders of Dominique Fells and Riah Milton, the protection of trans people of color continues to be the litmus test of freedom and equal opportunities," Pride Live board director Dr. Yvette Burton, explained to Billboard in a statement.

"Policies such as the Trump administration's reversed protections for transgender people in the U.S. health-care system, adds the disproportionate effect of fatal violence, impacted by the intersections of racism, sexism, homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia across communities and families."

Coronavirus has also had a deep impact on the economic stability of a list of organizations that support the LGBTQ community. The live-streamed event will benefit a number of organizations, including Brave Space Alliance, TransLatin Coalition, the Ally Coalition and Trans Lifeline, Billboard reported.

Separate from the Pride Live event, those who celebrate the history of the Stonewall Inn can also donate to the bar itself, according to CBS 2. The historic location is at risk of shutting its doors due to a lack of patrons during the pandemic. They've launched a GoFundMe, which has already raked in over $130,000. You can donate here.
