'A Way Out' All Endings Guide: Is There a Third Secret Ending?

A Way Out is a narrative-focused game with multiple endings, and there's currently some debate about just how many endings there are. In this short guide, we'll tell you everything we know about the dual-branched story of Leo and Vincent.

Since we are talking about endings, it goes without saying that SPOILERS for the story of A Way Out are ahead. Those who don't want to know the final outcome should turn back now.

UNLOCK ALL ENDINGS IN 'A WAY OUT'

The ending you unlock in A Way Out essentially depends on how you finish the game's very last chapter, titled "Conflict." After a moment of betrayal, the two cooperative partners, and friendly players, turn on each other. In the final moments of a heated altercation, Vincent and Leo spot a gun. The ending tied to the character that shoots the final bullet is the one you'll see.

If Vincent survives, you'll hold hands with Leo one last time and break the news of his death to Linda and Alex. If Leo survives, he'll leave Vincent's note on Carol's doorstep for her to read. Both endings are structured in a very similar way, but you'll see slightly different lore bits in each cutscene. You can watch both versions of the conclusion in the clip below.

Luckily, because both endings only rely on what happens in the game's final moments, it's easy to go back and reload your save to see both without having to play through the entire game multiple times.

IS THERE A THIRD ENDING IN 'A WAY OUT?'

While we're still scouring every last inch of A Way Out ourselves, we don't see evidence of a third ending or an ending in which both Vincent and Leo survive. Based on our chat with game Director Josef Fares late last year, this makes a lot of sense. At the time Fares did not see A Way Out as a product with tons of replay value and many branching paths.

He expressed a desire to make sure the entire story builds to the proper emotional cues. An ending in which both Vincent and Leo live could potentially change the story up just enough that it wouldn't conclude with the same kind of emotional weight. It also wouldn't make much sense given the scale of the betrayal that occurs.

That being said, there might still be a third ending that hasn't been discovered yet. As of now, however, the two endings are all that seem to be available.

A Way Out is available now on PS4, Xbox One and PC. If you're just starting your playthrough, read our guide for using the game's free Friend Pass feature.
