Teacher Appreciation Week begins on May 6; five days dedicated to making sure your educators know how much you appreciate them. To help celebrate those in charge of our future minds, Newsweek has picked out some of the deals available to teachers, competitions for the "best teachers" and gift ideas.
What is Teacher Appreciation Week?
Taking place from May 6 until May 10, Teacher Appreciation Week was originally Teacher Appreciation Day. Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of former President Franklin D. Roosevelt, asked Congress to proclaim a National Teachers' Day in 1953. But it wasn't until 1980 that Congress declared March 7 as the official day.
In 1985 the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) established Teacher Appreciation Week as the first full week of May, and this is how we celebrate it today.
