What Will happen in Season 2 of 'The Good Doctor'?

The first season of The Good Doctor ended in a cliffhanger, with Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) and Dr. Glassman's (Richard Schiff) jobs in jeopardy after a surgical mishap almost killed a patient.

Shaun's storyline is established in Season 1 as a young savant surgeon with autism who left behind a rural life in Wyoming to join the medical staff of St. Bonaventure Hospital in San Jose, California. It is difficult for him to connect on a personal level with his co-workers and patients, but he proves himself to be a brilliant, unique and unusual surgeon.

"The Good Doctor's message of inclusiveness resonates with our viewers and is a hallmark of what we aim to accomplish here at ABC," said ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey in a press release for Season 2. "We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Shaun Murphy will be back for another season."

The first episode of Season 2 is titled "Hello" and is Highmore's first writing credit on the show. A complicated surgery will set the dramatic tone of the season.

ABC’s “The Good Doctor” stars Antonia Thomas as Dr. Claire Browne, Beau Garrett as Jessica Preston, Hill Harper as Dr. Marcus Andrews, Freddie Highmore as Dr. Shaun Murphy, Richard Schiff as Dr. Aaron Glassman, Tamlyn... ABC/Bob D’Amico

"Hello" opens with Shaun, who has maintained his job at St. Bonaventure, and Dr. Jared Kalu (Chuku Modu) on his last day at the hospital. The two are treating homeless people in the area. For Shaun, who has struggled to connect with his patients in the past, Season 2 will tackle his communication skills, emotional intelligence and his ability to empathize not only with the people he treats, but with his fellow doctors.

Glassman will continue to struggle with his brain cancer diagnosis. He will work with Dr. Blaise played by Lisa Edelstein, best known for her role as Dr. Lisa Cuddy on House, a brilliant oncologist who will treat his brain tumor.

Cast members returning this season include Morgan (Fiona Gubelmann) and Alex (Will Yun Lee) as they were promoted to series regulars. Lea (Paige Spara) will also be returning to the show after she left in the middle of Season 1. However, Jared (Chuku Modu) will not return for the rest of Season 2 after "Hello" since the character has taken another job at a hospital in Denver. Meanwhile, Dr. Marcus Andrews (Hill Harper) has his eye set on the future of St. Bonaventure and strives to bring the hospital to the forefront of the medical world.

The Good Doctor will premiere September 24 on ABC at 10 p.m. ET.
