When Does 'Avengers 4' Takes Place? Rumor Suggests Five Years After 'Infinity War'

When does Avengers 4 take place? That's one of the many looming questions heading toward the May 2019 release date, and a new rumor might have the answer. A writer from SuperBroMovies claims Avengers 4 starts five years after the events of Avengers: Infinity War, not just a few months (the most popular running fan timeline theory). The report is largely unsubstantiated, as the writer included no further details. Stay skeptical until it's confirmed by Marvel Studios.

So let's dive into this theory. If there is a five-year time jump, Marvel must build an established world post-Thanos "snap." All the heroes who dissolved — Black Panther, Spider-Man, Winter Soldier, Dr. Strange, Falcon, Scarlet Witch, Nick Fury, Maria Hill, Mantis, Groot, Drax, Star-Lord — are gone. And the ones who are left — Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Hulk, War Machine, Rocket, Nebula, Wong, Okoye, Shuri, M'Baku — are left wondering what the hell to do next. Where is Thanos? Can they reverse time?

Before he died, Doctor Strange did say there were a couple ways the Avengers could win against Thanos, so perhaps a battle five years in the future is one of them. The time jump also gives Bruce and Hulk enough time to get back on good terms. Hawkeye can wrap up his family business. Captain Marvel can find her way back to Earth. Ant-Man can find his way out of the Quantum Realm. There's actually rumors (h/t The Hashtag Show) that an older version of Ant-Man's daughter, Cassie, has been cast in Avengers 4, which would make sense if there is a time jump of five years.

Skipping so far ahead would also make the deaths at the end of Infinity War feel more significant, and less like a cheap ending. If the deaths are going to be reversed, let's at least see a possible future where half the heroes are gone to let the sadness set in before the T'Challa presumably returns for the Black Panther sequel and Spider-Man comes back for Far From Home, the latter of which is said to pick up mere minutes after the conclusion of Avengers 4.

Look, time travel can fix anything, really. Looking for theories? We've got you covered. Avengers 4 arrives May 3, 2019.
