What Is 'Lady Chatterley's Lover' About?

Lady Chatterley's Lover is an adaption of D.H. Lawrence's 1928 novel of the same name and follows the love story of Lady Constance "Connie" Chatterley (played by Emma Corrin) and her gatekeeper, Oliver Mellors (Jack O'Connell).

Their love affair challenges all social norms and Connie is faced with the decision of ending her loveless marriage to wealthy landowner Sir Clifford Chatterley and shedding her upper-class social status to be with Oliver.

The novel was first published in Italy and in France in 1929 before a censored version arrived in the United Kingdom in 1960. It was also banned in numerous countries including the U.S., Canada, Australia, India, and Japan.

The book became notorious for its details of a romantic relationship between a young working-class man and an upper-class woman, and in particular for its explicit and detailed descriptions of sex and obscene language.

It was at the center of the obscenity trial known as Regina v. Penguin Books, Ltd in 1959 because of the novel's risqué sexual content and use of obscene language. After a six-day trial at the Old Bailey, the jury found Lady Chatterley's Lover was not obscene, and could therefore be published.

The trial itself was seen as a watershed moment, calling into question Britain's publishing laws and censorship.

Lady Chatterley's Lover is coming to cinemas on Wednesday, November 23, and Netflix on Friday, December 2.
