Since Hollywood awards seasons is in full swing now that the 2019 Golden Globe Awards are in the books, the Directors Guild of America released its nominees Monday, including some very familiar names.
The DGA winners will be celebrated Feb. 2 at the Hollywood and Highland Center's Ray Dolby Ballroom in Hollywood, reported The Hollywood Reporter. The DGA awards are one of many leading up to the mother of all Hollywood celebrations, the Academy Awards, slated for Feb. 24.
Alfonso Cuaron, who won a Golden Globe for Roma on Sunday, heads the DGA best feature film nominees. He will compete against Bradley Cooper for A Star Is Born, Spike Lee for BlacKkKlansman, Adam McKay for Vice and Peter Farrelly for Green Book, reported Variety. The same directors competed head-to-head for the Golden Globe Best Director trophy.
In the Golden Globe bounty last Sunday, Cuaron won for Best Director and Best Foreign Language film, while Green Book won for Best Musical or Comedy and Best Screenplay. All the DGA nominees listed above were also Golden Globe nominees in several categories.
Cuaron continues to stack up the prestigious industry awards, he won the New York Film Critics Circle Best Director award. Five years ago, he captured the DGA and an Academy Award for directing Gravity, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.
About 17,000 DGA members cast their votes for the guild winners.
DGA also nominated Cooper for its first-time director award. Cooper will compete with other rookie directors Bo Burnham for Eighth Grade, Carlos Lopez Estrada for Blindspotting, Matthew Heineman for A Private War and Boots Riley for Sorry to Bother You.
In recent years, Cooper garnered Best Actor Oscars for Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle and American Sniper and for producing American Sniper.
McKay previously was nominated for a DGA for The Big Short. At the Cannes Film Festival in May, Spike Lee won the Grand Prix award for BlacKkKlansman.
Variety reported the following directors were "overlooked" for a DGA nomination: Barry Jenkins for If Beale Street Could Talk, Ryan Coogler for Black Panther, Damien Chazelle for First Man, Debra Granik for Leave No Trace, Yorgos Lanthimos for The Favourite and Marielle Heller for Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Also overlooked: Bohemian Rhapsody director Bryan Singer, according to The Hollywood Reporter, adding that Singer was fired during production.
Bohemian Rhapsody won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama.
However, the DGA also nominates exceptional TV and commercial projects. Leading the TV nominations are Atlanta, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Netflix's A Series of Unfortunate Events.
Leading the DGA TV nominations is HBO with eight, followed by Netflix with seven, CBS with five, NBC with four and Amazon Prime, FX and Showtime with three apiece. Hulu and the Food Network also garnered one nomination each.
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announces its Oscar nominations on Jan. 22.
